Electrical Switchboard Upgrade

Switchboard Upgrade Service in Melbourne

Effective 29 March 2023, new minimum standards were implemented for rental properties in Victoria. Rental properties are now required to have power outlets and lighting circuits protected by a compliant residual current device (RCD) or Residual Current Breaker with Over-Current (RCBO) in accordance with AS/NZS 3000 wiring standards, as well as AS/NZS 3190, AS/NZS 61008.1, or AS/NZS 61009.1 standards for residual current devices.

Non-compliance with these standards will result in severe consequences:

  • Prior to moving in, renters have the right to terminate the lease without penalty or notice.
  • Additionally, for any current lease, renters may request an upgrade to the switchboard as an 'urgent repair', which can incur costs of up to $2,500.

Switchboard Upgrade

Inclusions

  • Removal of old fuses, circuit breakers and old switchboard enclosure (including single-pole enclosures for newly installed circuits or RCDs protecting circuits on fuses)

  • Installation of new switchboard enclosure with new main switch and RCBOs for circuit protection.

  • Installation of heat shrink sleeving for any active, neutral or earth cabling in switchboard where applicable.

  • Switchboard inspection and certificate from ESV and electrical inspector.

  • All switchboard circuitry comes from Clipsal, a trusted company that meets RCSC's high standards. If Clipsal is unavailable or unable to be used, RCSC will use an equivalent brand with an equally good reputation.

Exclusions

  • MAINS UPGRADE OR MAINS BOX UPGRADES:

    • If a mains upgrade is required, new 16mm mains cables shall be run to a new fused mains box with 100A capacity to meet requirements (if overhead feed).
    • If a new switchboard enclosure doesn't fit inside the meter enclosure due to the meter panel being too large, a new meter panel or meter box will have to be installed. If the mains cables do not meet proper requirements, this may include a mains upgrade and a new fused mains box (if overhead feed).
  • ADDITIONAL SWITCHBOARD CIRCUITRY:

    • Any additional switchboard circuitry, such as 3-phase RCBOs, contactors, doorbell transformers, or surge protectors, will be reused in upgrades. If new switchboard circuitry is required, additional costs may apply.
  • ADDITIONAL WIRING OR CABLING RECTIFICATION:

    • Any additional wiring or rewiring of electrical circuits that fail any testing after the switchboard is completed or if any faults arise that cannot be rectified.
    • Any electrical circuit wired in the incorrect cabling size will be rewired to meet cabling requirements. This may include rewiring entire circuits.
  • REPLACEMENT OF ELECTRICAL ITEMS OR APPLIANCES:

    • After a switchboard upgrade, some electrical items such as lighting, power points or appliances may have faults that were not previously detected due to a lack of circuit protection. RCBOs provide additional protection which can cause some items that were working before to present with faults, resulting in their needing to be replaced. While some repairs can be as simple as replacing a blown light globe or transformer, other problems can be signs of an underlying issue within a larger appliance that requires additional work.
